Remembering UHA 1968-69
by Michelle Alton (Shelley Stern)
Ellsworth Monkton Toohey Her real name was Betsey (Elizabeth) Rall. I think she got into our clique via Erica, who was also a floutist at the Hartt School. She was tiny, always wore loose fitting raggy hobo clothes and had a LOT of boyfriends never was sure if Jack was one of them. Ellsworth amazingly took the time to learn the Rune alphabet from The Hobbit. She and other "Hobbit Heads" were able to communicate secretly using the dwarf runes. I was an outsider in THAT! The nickname was a character in the Ayn Rand cult block buster, The Fountainhead. Not sure why she chose that name, but she was never Betsey to us just Ellsworth. Funny. I lost my identity by being known only as one of the Triumvirate that always hung together. But now I cannot recall whether it was comprised of Lynne, Erica, and me, or Erica, Ellsworth, and me. Perhaps we were really a foursome. Sadly, Betsey "walked on" several years ago. A tragically shortened life. She left behind a husband and two beautiful and talented daughters.
