Remembering UHA 1968-69
by Michelle Alton (Shelley Stern)
Ben Holden and my Library Caper I hate to say this, but we spent a LOT of time cutting classes, sitting in the cafeteria talking, smoking, and basically doing no good. Well one day I was telling Ben Holden about a crazy thing that was going on in my Poli Sci course. Dr. B was, to me, a pretty creepy character. He had a diabolical look about him. And he would always call on me to answer questions and then make a big fuss about the wisdom of my answers. But I have to tell you that I was no whiz kid in that class. I thought, probably correctly, that he was hitting on me. So Ben came up with this diabolical prank. I was to write an anonymous love note to Dr. B asking him to meet me at some appointed time in the Karl Marx (where else?) section of the library . I composed the note and it was VERY soppy and corny. Ben slipped it into Dr. B's faculty mailbox (I believe), and the deed was done. We spent hours laughing about it, until the day and time came for the rendezvous. I, of course, did not show up. But Ben did, to see if the prof would show. It embarrasses me to even TELL this story. But unless Ben was having me on, the professor DID show up. Hank Mishkoff was a witness too, I have just now learned. We had a good laugh at the old guy's expense, and then the remorse set in. But there was nothing we could do to undo the damage of making a fool of the learned man. I'll bet Ben still cringes when/if he thinks of that mean prank.
