Year 2 (9/69–5/70), Part 3

October 15, 1969 – Moratorium Day. A march that was organized locally by what was left of the SDS and various participating colleges in the Hartford Area – including the SA of UH – led by Ben Holden with Jack as part of the march preparations. There was much discussion and publicity leading to the march – which was part of a Nationwide Protest of US Involvement in the Vietnam War. At this point; many knew there was infiltration into the ranks by the FBI – that had led to an earlier demonstration in New Haven that turned into a deliberately instigated riot. The concern was great; but due to the careful and meticulous planning of the parade and events; it was a huge success and went off without a hitch. An area of great concern was when the march went through the poorer sections of Hartford; but much to the relief and joy of the marchers and organizers – there were supporting signs – cheering and waving throughout the area – with some even joining the march. A nearly flawless march and events of the Moratorium demonstrated the solidarity, leadership and total cooperation of the community during the event. This was one of Hartford's finest hours.

Meanwhile, the paper continued to provide leadership, inspiration and a voice to many students. From a demonstration at North House led by Ben and Dorm Students to protest unfair treatment and representations of residents- including antiquated Curfew and Visitation policies- to a letter writing campaign that protested the disciplining and eviction of a student because he had a dog on campus. Many articles that featured industrial pollution and other corporate “crimes” along with special reports in the Music, Art, and Drama school. Finally, the first Earth Day was to be celebrated in a series of events sponsored by the UH News and the SA.; along with concerts by Hartt College and special exhibitions by the Hartford Art School. There was a special Supplement by the UH News for Earth Day which continued the ongoing themes on pollution and the little that was being done – and the dangers of continuing to ignore our planet.
